 2008 Ghost Stories

In recent weeks it has come to my attention that certain parties are using my ghost stories and those of my contributors as references for their own commercial enterprises.  If you or someone you know is writing a book on ghosts in the Pacific Northwest, PLEASE DO NOT!!! copy or use the following stories or any other materials within this website as references.

JEFF- INTERESTING STORY ABOUT SOUTHERN OREGON COLLEGE AND BILL MUELEMANS.  I TAUGHT AT THE COLLEGE FOR 27 YEARS AND KNEW HIM SLIGHTLY- FIRST TIME I  HAVE HEARD OF PARANORMAL ENCOUNTERS AT SWEDENBORG  HOUSE. I T WAS MY UNDERSTANDING PEOPLE HAD ODD EXPERIENCES N THE OLD STAGE ON  2ND FLOOR OF CHURCHILL HALL.

I SEE PHONE BOOK  DOES NOT HAVE BILL'S ADDRESS SO HE MAY HAVE MOVED OR PASSED ON. DO YOU KNOW IF HE IS STILL AROUND ? I HAVE HAD MANY PARANORMAL EXPERIENCES - INCLUDING THREE UFO - AND POLTERGEIST ACTIVITY IN MY HOUSE ONCE FOR THREE WEEKS AND ENOUGH TO MAKE ME INTERESTED IN THE SUBJECT. I AM 80 AND  A  RETIRED PROFESSOR OF ART.

I HAVE A  QUESTION FOR YOU. IF GHOSTS (OR THE LIKE) EXIST- HOME COME EVERYONE THINKS YOU CAN LOCATE THEM ONLY I THE DARK ? ANY THEORY ON THIS OTHER THAN A PERSONS' EMOTIONS MIGHT BE HIGHER PITCHED ? IF THEY ARE AROUND- THEY ARE THERE IN THE DAYLIGHT TOO I WOULD GUESS.

THANKS- AND WHERE ARE YOU NOW ?  STILL INTERESTED IN THE SUBJECT---DID YOU EVER PUBLISH ? BEST WISHES.

  JIM D

HI JIM,

I DID TRY CONTACTING BILL MUELEMANS WHEN I WROTE THE ARTICLE, WHICH WAS ABOUT EIGHT YEARS AGO.  I COULD NOT FIND HIM THEN, SO I SUSPECT HE HAS INDEED PASSED ON.  WHEN I WAS THERE, IN THE SWEEDENBERG HOUSE, SOME OF THE STAFF TOLD ME THAT THINGS STILL HAPPENED TO THEM.

ABOUT YOUR QUESTION, REGARDING GHOSTS APPEARING IN THE EVENINGS.  I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE PARANORMAL IS ONLY CONFINED TO NIGHT TIME, IT IS JUST THAT WE ARE TOO BUSY, (MOST OF THE TIME,) DURING THE DAY TO NOTICE WHAT IS HAPPENING.  AT NIGHT TIME, WE ARE MORE LIKELY TO TAKE NOTICE OF THE STRANGE.  I ALSO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SOME GROUPS, WHO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS, WHICH IS A SUREFIRE WAY OF SCARING YOURSELF.

I HOPE THAT ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION IN PART.  IF YOU STILL LIVE IN THE ASHLAND AREA YOU ARE LIKELY TO CONTINUE SEEING MORE UFOS, AS WELL AS GHOSTS.  EVEN THOUGH IT IS A SMALL COMMUNITY, IT SEEMS SOME KIND OF NEXUS OF THE PARANORMAL AND STRANGE.

 BEST WISHES,
JEFF DAVIS

SUBJECT:  Flavel House

On your site you mention that you heard that the Flavel House in  Astoria, Oregon was not haunted, but I had a different experience  there.  I've never even been inside, but once when visiting the city,   I was walking around the grounds of the house when it was closed and I was overcome with this overwhelming emotional feeling that  something horrible had happened.  I was near the southeast corner of the house, on the sidewalk near a large tree.  The feeling came as I  walked around the tree and it drew me towards the house as if it was  coming from the house.  I literally just about came to tears, saying  "Oh my God!" to this intense feeling of extreme sadness and torment.  When I started to become aware of myself and gain curiosity to the  feeling, it subsided and never returned.

HI Tara,

I may have mis-written if I said it was not haunted.  A lot of people do believe in haunts, it's the managers who are skeptical.  I have spoken with several people who said things happened to them inside, though not outside.  One interesting thing is that after Captain Flavel died, his wife and daughters installed a heavy duty locking door separating their bedrooms from the rest of the house.  They did this because they were burgled more than once.  The neighborhood was not so nice after dark, and I suspect that some odd things did happen outside.

Thanks for sharing, and I'll post your comments on my next update.
 Jeff

Hi.  I've recently begun ghost hunting, and as people find out about my new-found hobby, I get a lot of people telling me lots of stories.  My sister used to go to school at Washington State University.  I was on your site ghostsandcritters.com, and read a post from Beth saying that her niece was staying in a dorm room that used to be a mental ward for a hospital that used to be there.  I was wondering if you knew anything about this, and if so, could you give me any information that you may know?  My sister and her friend claim that the dorm room they stayed in was haunted, and I'm wondering if the same hall, or even room, was involved in this lady's story.  Any information you could give me would be great.  Thank you.

SUBJECT:  About a haunted place

Hello Jeff,

my name is Kanitra and I am resident of Tacoma currently doing some personal research during my free time on a legend about the old city of Tacoma. During my search, I stumbled across your page. I had no problem delving into the stories seeing as how I LOVE to hear about local haunted places. I often try to visit them to encounter some of the paranormal activity myself. I've been looking for a book that tells me about haunted places that are local, and some of the places you speak about are right down the street. So I am thrilled to say that I am going to purchase both of your books, and hopefully I will encounter some phenomenon of my own.

But the legend I am researching is about the tunnels called 'China Tunnels' said to be built under Tacoma. Legend says that they were used to smuggle Chinese in after they were outlawed, as well as smuggling drugs such as opium to brothels and other places. I was enthralled to read the story from a man named Gary C., written on November 7th, 2004.  It's located at the top of your page and it's titled, VERY HAUNTED PLACE. Although researching this project is fun due to the fact that I am finding TONS of different information, it would be more to my advantage to contact and possibly meet with someone who has heard the legends, and done some research themselves.

Gary seems to be that person, because I haven't stumbled across any other persons claiming to have found the tunnels. He didn't specify the building he was speaking of, and I would love to know which one he is talking about, because I probably pass it every day. So I was wondering if it would be possible to give me this man’s e-mail or if there was a way you could set up a means of contact between him and I. It would be a great help to my research, as well as thrilling to my senses. Thank you so much for taking time out of your schedule to read this e-mail, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
kanitra

Jeff’s Note: Unfortunately, even though I tried relocating Gary, he never responded to my emails.  I hope Kanitra was able to find it without his help.

SUBJECT:  A thank you and a story

Dear Mr. Davis,

Hello.  My name is Darci Chappell and I am the Co-Founder of Emerald Valley Paranormal based out of Junction City, Oregon.  A new associate of mine (Regan from A.P.A.R.T of Washington) introduced me to your books and I must say you are an incredible researcher and writer.  We use your "A Haunted Tour Guide to the Pacific Northwest" like a bible and have driven to a few of these places to check them out.  We have yet to investigate any of them yet.

The reason I am writing to you is to let you know of a few places we have done that may or may not be of interest to you.  I don't know if you want to write about them but I thought I would tell you about one in particular.

We love doing a lot of outdoor investigations.  Lets us spread out and really get into the investigation without worrying about someone’s china cabinet.  Anyway, we found a place (Laurel Grove sometimes known as Laurel Hill Cemetery in Goshen, Oregon) that is off the wall.  We have been there only twice so far but we captured this.

The image is just above her head.

Here is a little closer look.

Let me tell you about this photo.

We had heard about this location from a former member (thought he was describing this location but it was someplace else).  My husband and I drove to it and looked around.  WOW!  What a mess.  The grass came up to your knee's and you couldn't see what you were walking on.  We decided to stick to mainly the paths but you could tell that there was a lot of damage due to downed trees in the area because there were drag marks all over the place.  A few of the flat style headstones even had chips taken out of corners from yarding the trees out.  Graves partially unburied.  Was a true mess.  We walked around for a good 2 hours looking it all over and trying to get a feel for the place as well as some base readings.  We decided that it looked ok enough so we thought we would go back that early evening with the rest of the team and see what we could catch.  We weren't calling this an official investigation just going to have some fun and we were only going to stay till just after dark.

We had been talking with another team and decided to meet them up at the site that evening to do introductions and get to know each other a bit.  When we all arrived there were folks in the cemetery already set up on an above ground crypt looking like they were setting up for toddy night.  We weren't sure what they were doing but they told us of quite a few things they had heard and witnessed themselves in the cemetery and told us we were insane for staying longer than dark.  Full body ghosts had been seen as well as voices and audible footsteps falling when there isn't anyone around.  We thought we were in for a treat.  We weren't disappointed.

Now on this night we had a slight breeze from the North (as usual).  We had no rain, had not rained in days.  Pollen count was down that day.  Now this cemetery is situated on a hill overlooking I-5.  You have the Pepsi Bottling Co. just down the road and the lights of Eugene and Springfield everywhere.  This place doesn't get "Dark".  You also have a transient that roams around on the outside of the fence.....most of the time.  It's a little busy normally.

My team took the upper section and the lower section where the poor where buried.  Most of them have no markers and those that did they have long since been moved.  The other team took the middle and off to one side.

On this night one of our investigators was walking down the center walking path and heard someone walking right behind her and the boys.  When they would stop walking you could hear it shuffle a few steps longer then stop.  In another section in the upper right hand corner I was talking to my husband about something and started having rocks thrown at me.  When we first looked at this place it seemed rather quiet.  But it was nothing like we thought it would be.  Now most of the activity occurred right after dusk.

Once it got dark we noticed a light.  It was towards the gate when we noticed it but there is a 5 foot ditch down to the road from the graveyard.  The light would have been 7 to 8 feet from the blacktop which is also on a downward slope.  This light was moving along the graveyard like someone was walking in the graveyard with a flashlight.  Now we were using night vision and could see that there was no body attached to the light.  There was no car located in the direction of the light.  It could not have been a reflection from the freeway because there is nothing to reflect off of.  Rather than investigate further into the light and since we had the Jr team with us we decided that it was too dangerous for them to be there and decided to get them out.  We had planned on leaving at dark and decided we would go back when we could better devote time and energy to a proper investigation.

When we got home that evening around 9pm we went over all the evidence.  Nothing.  I went over the evp’s that next week and got some evp's which were cool.  Then my sister sent me a whole slew of pictures she had taken.  The picture above was one of them.  She sent it to me by mistake.  It being just another picture of Nichole.  There wasn't really any need to keep it right?  When I opened the picture up I saw the face immediately.  I was floored to say the least.  I sent it back to her and she flipped.  She later told me that she had never checked the picture.

A few weeks later we rounded the team up and took a few new team member with us this time and the Jr team stayed home.  With what we experienced last time we figured it would be a good way to test the new recruits to see the fright and flight skills.  Our new friends on the other team rejoined us and we planned on hitting the cemetery really hard.

I took the new recruits down to the pauper section while the rest of my team went to the middle section.  Myself and the recruits were doing some evp work and again the light.  Out of the corner of my eye I saw a dash of white.  I thought well maybe a cat or something.  Upon checking the voice recorders at the same time I saw the flash you can hear a female say "Don't Hanna!”  {Ok...maybe we have a Hanna now}  Upon reviewing the recorders later after the Hanna statement you could hear a male and female.  The male was saying "Sorry" and the female "I got her".  Now normally I would think there was someone around talking about their child.  There was no one else in the cemetery and no one parked anywhere near the cemetery or near it.  The other team also heard a voice from a little girl during this investigation as well.  We joined with the rest of my team and decided to do some work in the location that the face was caught.  In this area I kept hearing a voice saying "Momma".  So I discounted it thinking I was hearing things.  I was asking questions of the female "Why did you show yourself to my niece?"  "Why are you here?"  Again I keep hearing a little one saying "Momma" but no one else is.  At this time the other team radio's us that they just witnessed a dark mass move across the road just across from where we were.  We chased after the dark mass but didn't see nor did we hear anything.  We asked the form if it was the one saying naughty words at an investigator and got a response of no (noticed later in review).  After that the night died down and nothing happened.  We left shortly after.  Upon reviewing the voice recorder in the area of where we caught the picture of the face we got a response of "I meet a friend".  An investigator on one of the boards I belong to agrees but thinks it is saying "I meet as a new friend".  Pretty cool.  No other photos or video were caught.

We have not been back since.

Now for the photos with the blown up one sure...you can say matrixing or a slew of other photographic anomalies.  But when you look at the original it is a little more difficult.  I have tried to make this matrixing.  I have not got the equipment to pull the background away from the picture.  I can't pull the trees out to see if the face pattern still holds.  It is a photo I just can't debunk.

This location is rather neat.  It is huge.  Over 2000 graves which include one of the founding fathers of Springfield.  It is unkempt.  It is also private and not city owned.  So you will need permission to be there after dark and it is patrolled.  But from the stories I have been told there have been rituals of all sorts performed in the cemetery as well as kids going in and knocking headstones over and painting on them.  So sad.  The location is beautiful.  You can see the rest of our dust particles on our website at http://www.EmeraldValleyParanormal.com

I just thought I would write to you and thank you first of all, for your wonderful books that have helped us to get to know our State a little better.  And second, to share one of our stories with you.

 Happy writing to you.
Sincerely,

Jeff:

I have only begun to get into your website, but wanted to let you know that I am really enjoying it.  Ghosts have held a fascination for me since I was maybe 12-years-old and read an old book my grandmother had.  I don't remember the name of it and she didn't know what I was talking about when I asked about the book later in life--let's just say it was about ghosts, a house, and a truly freaked-out family.

I have a story I would like to share with you about a house my husband and I rented in Albany, OR.  We moved to Albany in the summer of 2002 and moved out in May 2003--my husband transferred to Idaho.  The story is fairly lengthy and I wanted to know if you would prefer an e-mail or Word document attachment. (By long, I would predict a page or two).  We have wondered for some time if there was anyone in Oregon collecting current "ghost stories".  We have checked out many web-sites, but have found few that are kept up for any length of time....if you ever want to check out Idaho, we have found some cool places in the five years we've lived here.  I have a love of historic cemeteries and we go to the oldest pioneer cemeteries we can find wherever we go.

Thanks for your time,

Karen A.

Hey.
So rather than hearing experiences from other people, I stumbled upon one myself, and thought you might be interested.  (I recently received your book Weird Washington as a birthday present, and noticed you, too, have been to this location.)  The baby graves, as you probably know, is a huge thing around this area, but mostly just for teens to go out and drink and scare each other.  It got the point where I didn't even believe it was haunted.  Except for the other day, three friends and I went out there and decided to snoop around one last time.  We got there, opened our doors, and I asked, "Is anyone here with us right now?"  Immediately, I was overcome with the feeling that something was going to happen, but I didn't know what.  The next thing we know (though I didn't get the chance to see this), one of my friends' hair started moving at the top, like someone was twirling it.  Everyone started screaming about it, so I turned around to see what was going on, and felt an electric shock go through me to the point where I couldn't move at all.  After maybe a second of that, it just died down to a shock.  After maybe 5 seconds of this not stopping, I started screaming, and we drove off immediately.

Just thought you might be interested in hearing that story.
Sincerely,
Katy V.

SUBJECT:  Governor Hotel

Hi there...

On your website, you asked for info in regards to the governor hotel in downtown Portland. I worked there from 1997-1999 and I can't say I experienced anything paranormal. At night it was a bit creepy, but I think it's just the fact it's historic and you almost WANT to feel/see something paranormal. I do know this much though. I came into work one morning just as a dead body was discovered. The man had hung himself from his bathroom door with his belt, if I recall correctly. It was in room 601 or 611, I believe. I tried to find info online to refresh my memory, but couldn't find anything. Anywho, that's the strangest thing that happened while I was there. I have read one of your books and enjoy checking your website now and then.

Thanks very much!

Dear Jeff,

I was wondering if you could help me.

My family and I stayed in a holiday cottage in the U.K. and one evening as I sat alone I heard two very distinct propeller type noises (like a strong electric fan) close to my right ear.

The place we stayed in was very old, and I asked the owner if it had a presence but she said it did not. However, we all felt that there was something there. My baby son kept smiling at something that was not there, and his eyes followed something. My 9yr old daughter said she felt a presence in the room where I heard the propeller noise.

Please let me know if this noise is attributed to a presence.

Many thanks,
Nabila R

HI Nabila,
I am sorry that I cannot tell you much about the presence you felt at the cottage without more information.  These are usually attributed to past events, or people who lived there in the past.  By the sound of it, you may have encountered some kind of remnant of a past event.  Where there is no personality left behind, but rather a reenactment of the event.  Sort of like people who see a night watchman walking his beat, years after the actual man has retired or died.

Have you been able to research the history of the cottage, or village where it is located?  There might be some past tragedy or even happy significant historic event you could trace it to.

Sorry I could not be more help,
Jeff Davis

SUBJECT:  Lady in Black

Hello Jeff,

Please don't include my name or e-mail on your site.

I had an experience in Seattle a few years ago and have never forgotten what happened.

A few years ago my family stayed in the Mayflower Park Hotel on 4th Street in Seattle.  I woke up and saw a woman dressed in black, wearing a long dress and a black hat with a veil covering her face.  She had her back to me and was looking out the window.  She turned and I saw the veil over her face.  I didn't see her face, just the hat and veil.  She floated towards me and when I woke up my husband and made a noise.  She disappeared.

I've searched the internet to find out if anyone else had an experience and saw your site.

SUBJECT:  Ghosts: Kamola Hall and Kamiak Butte

Hi Jeff,

I've been looking at your website and enjoyed the article on ghost photography--I have a couple questions and things to add.

First, Kamola Hall at Central Washington University is most definitely haunted. I stayed there for a week a few years ago in the summer and had some very strange things happen to me--for one, I walked into my room, which was on the 4th floor and L-shaped (the top of the L was caused by the hallway turning and cutting off part of the room), and when I walked into that extra space (the top of the L), I could not move--I was taken over by this horrifying sense of..."ghastliness" and "dread" would be the correct terms, I think. The farther I walked into the space the worse it got (I took a couple steps in), and it seemed that it was coming from above my head .I felt like I wanted to die. I didn't feel in danger, but I had to get away from that feeling. When I was in there, it was as if my awareness of the room behind me dimmed and all I could see/perceive was the wall ahead of me and the ceiling above me. I made my mom, who is very sensitive (used to be able to see auras etc.), walk into that space, and she didn't feel anything--apparently I was the only one who was aware of the presence/whatever it was...I was okay even to look into it as long as I didn't cross the invisible line across the carpet from the bottom part of the L (the doorway)...if you look at this floor plan, I was in 361:
http://www.cwu.edu/~housing/reshalls/halls/floorplans/kamola_3.htm

(The doorway is actually in the next wall up...the "L" is here turned 90 degrees counterclockwise and the door, which on this floor plan is at the top of the L, was actually on the flat part of the L...I'm sorry if this is confusing. Anyway, where the door opens on the floor plan is the haunted spot. I don't know why their floor plan is incorrect; they may have remodeled because the plan also shows a door in the hallway right outside that was not there when I stayed in the building.)

Anyway, I started to notice things like lights being turned on while I was away--I was always very careful to turn off the light and I would come back to find it on. Additionally, my key would move around the room--I did not see it move, but I would always be unable to find it when I was getting ready to head out, and I *know* that I had put it in a certain spot. None of my other belongings were moved. It got to the point that I would leave the room with my key in a zipped pouch and my fingers around the shape of it so I *knew* I had it with me. The door was also frustrating to open--I was the only person who could open it. Once, I heard a knock at my door (having heard no footsteps) and opened it to see no one, nor was anyone anywhere down the long hallway that led to my room--they would have had to have sprinted to get out of sight before I opened the door.

I went up the stairs that you can see on the far left end of the floor plan (STAIR 300I) to see what was up there--this was in the middle of the afternoon. It was oppressively hot up there and dusty, and I found myself looking down a dim hallway (which, had I been thinking about it, led to directly above my room). The light up there felt void and dead, and I felt very uncomfortable...if you've seen the first Lord of the Rings movie, when Frodo looks down the road and it seems to shift and draw closer to him right before the Black Riders arrive, that's what happened to me--the hallway seemed to get increasingly dim in an unnatural way, and I suddenly wanted to run. You could not have paid me a hundred thousand dollars to walk down that hallway by myself. I went downstairs pretty quickly. One afternoon close to that one, I decided that I was sick of being afraid of a stupid area in my room and decided to deal with it. I closed my door, shut off the light, and walked as far as I could into that space. That lasted about 30 seconds, but it felt like days...I couldn't deal with it and ran out of my room, only to come back later that night.

The last and creepiest thing that happened was that I (once again, alone in the building in the afternoon...break time from the summer program) went to use the restroom down the hall (333 on the floor plan). I am always paranoid, having grown up in a city, about being "alone" in a public restroom, so all my senses were on full alert in a fairly echoey bathroom (the window was not open, so all echoes were confined to the bathroom). And the sunlight felt strangely "dead" again as it had upstairs. I had the vague sense that someone had just left the bathroom, though I hadn't seen anyone on my way down the hall. I went into one of the stalls. I did not hear anything--the door did not open, there were no footsteps or the unavoidable rustle of cloth on cloth as someone walks, there was no noise of the stall door(s) moving, and the locks on the doors were not the kind that could shut by themselves--therefore, you can imagine my shock when the stall door across from me suddenly and loudly locked. My breath caught, and a second later a disembodied voice at about head level began to *sing*. I still have the tune in my head. Needless to say, I got out of the bathroom as fast as I could--I glanced under the stall but no feet/bag/anything. I don't really remember the next few minutes because I was panicking. Later, I felt really, really stupid--I had actually met a ghost who had attempted to communicate with me (I am a musician and I think she--for it was a she--was trying to talk to me that way), and I'd run away. One day maybe I'll go back.

My mother called me several months later--she had been reading a Halloween article on hauntings in Washington State. She mentioned Kamola Hall and said, "Isn't that where you stayed?" "Yes..." I replied. She read me the description of "Lola Kamola", a WWI (or WWII--opinions differ)-era student who stayed in the women's dorm of Kamola Hall and hanged herself from the rafters above her 4th-story room when she found out that her fiancé had been killed in the war. Legend has it that she died in her wedding dress and that, sadly, the man was still alive and found her there when he came to reassure her that it had been addressed to the wrong person, but I don't know the truth of that--I do know that apparently that room and that end of the hallway has been locked up since the '60s. Lola knocks on doors, turns on/off lights, moves objects, and generally acts as a prankster. In my case, I think I somehow was attuned to the other side of her, the side that began the legend. What I sensed was a horror and dread of what she was doing to herself as she dangled from the rafters, as well as despair. I have spoken to a couple of current residents of Kamola Hall and they have never experienced anything beyond the "usual" noises, pranks, etc. I don't know why I was privy to the darker side of Lola (probably not her real name). I did some other research--the internet was surprisingly unhelpful, but I did find this: http://www.nbc11.com/entertainment/2588243/detail.html

"I was surprised that he was given a large front room, complete with balcony and its very own BATHROOM, if you've ever lived in a dorm, you know they don't have that little feature very often!"
"...so they asked the building manager who lived above them. "No one" he replied, adding that the fourth floor had been sealed off since the 1960s and that NO ONE had lived there in a very very long time. After some more investigation, the boys found out about 'Lola Kamola.' She had been a student at what was then the state Teachers College. This was just at the beginning of WWI. She was madly in love with a fellow student, and he went away to war. Despondent, she then hung herself in her fourth floor room. That room was directly above my son's room."

I did some research on the CWU site and found the floor plan that I've shown you. The ONLY "large front room, complete with balcony and its very own BATHROOM" that is underneath any fourth floor room (the right half of the 4th floor was all attic space) is Room 362, which was next to mine (private bathrooms are not visible on here). I then looked at the 4th floor floor plan (http://www.cwu.edu/~housing/reshalls/halls/floorplans/kamola_4.htm) and saw that 361 and 362 had been below double-bedroom 461; if you look at the "ordinance lines" (the dotted lines cutting across the floor plan; look at the key), that puts my room approximately below "attic 460A", which has hatch access and was small enough to have strong rafters.

I'm sorry this is so long, but I thought you might be interested to know about it. I'd like to ask you if you know of any sacred Native American places on or near Kamiak Butte, outside of Palouse, Washington? I had a very disturbing experience there a couple years ago on the west face of the butte--we'd climbed the east face and as we were sitting watching the sunset, I had the sudden feeling that we needed to go. Having not gone down the other side, I wanted to see what that was like, even though I had a feeling of uneasiness that I ignored. As we started to descend the western face, I was hit with the sudden strong feeling that we HAD to get off the butte before the sun went down. I started walking faster and then--and this is not normal for me--started running. I probably almost broke my ankle several times and had to wait for my mom to catch up--she didn't quite sense the same thing, but she too knew something was off. At one point she got too far behind me and I slowed down--as I came around a bend, I swore for half a second that I saw a human shape leaning against a tree (like those iron cowboy silhouette statues in people's yards), then I looked again and it was gone. I waited for her to catch up and we went as fast as possible down the side. The sun kept sinking lower and lower through the trees and my sense of anxiety and, to be honest, malevolence around me got worse. We finally did make it to the parking lot, and I kept looking behind us long after we were on the road and the park was receding into the distance. It felt the way I have heard "bad medicine" or "bad spirits" described in Native American writings and literature--I know that Steptoe Butte was called "the power mountain" (good medicine, not bad), but I can't find anything on Kamiak Butte. If you know anything, please let me know.

I'm now going to end this incredibly long email--I hope it was useful/interesting, and I hope to hear back soon.

SUBJECT:  trying to find info

I was just wondering if you knew of the where abouts of the place that is commonly called "the Stairs" I am told it is out Lincoln Creek Rd, but then I have also been told it is in Napavine. What it was is a school that a guy went crazy and locked all the doors from the out side, while school was in and burned the place down. The only thing remaining is the stairs that people often say they see a little boy out there playing.  If you could give me the info on were exactly it is or tell me someone who could I would be so grateful!

Also on your web page do you let people send in pics to have others ( or even just yourself) check them out to see what people think about them? I have a bunch of pics with orbs and one that looks like it is a full body apparition of a female.

Thanks for your time

Hello Coco,
There are quite a few "sets" of stairs out there.  Probably the most prominent ones I've heard of are the "thousand Stairs" near Spokane.  There are also the 13 steps to Hell at the Maltby Cemetery in the Puget Sound.  When I was in Centralia I spoke with one of the local folk about the old elementary school, which burned down several decades ago.  According to her, all that was left of the school after the fire was a set of stairs.  That sounds more like what you are searching for.  I do not know more about it.  If you contacted the local historical society, and did not mention ghosts, they might be able to give you more information about the school fire.  If you do find out more information, please let me know.
Good luck,
Jeff Davis
